Until 1990 SEC 1 held the distinction of being the only 3'6" (1067mm) gauge electric railway unit in Western Australia. The State Electricity Commission operated a short siding using electric traction from the WAGR mainline into the East Perth Power station. It was built in 1924 by the Vickers Metropolitan Electrical Co. in England. The locomotive entered service on 1 August, 1924 on the East Perth power station siding. Here it was used to shunt coal wagons from the WAGR main line at East Perth into the power station. It has four 150 hp. (112 kW) motors which operated on 600 volts D.C., collected from overhead wiring by a pantograph on the cab roof. In March, 1969 the East Perth power station was converted from coal to oil firing, so rendering SEC 1 redundant. In July 1972 it was transferred to the Rail Museum at Bassendean.
